The centre at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin has been transformed into a place that appeals to the senses in a special way thanks to an innovative light art concept in the outdoor area. The focus is on the newly designed air intake and exhaust shafts in the basement, which rise between 3.3 and 5 metres above the ground. These shafts, positioned at the public access points, have been developed into impressive light art installations that are both aesthetically and functionally convincing.
The central feature is the use of a dichroid foil, which creates fascinating light and reflection effects during the day. Sunlight is captured, creating a dynamic play of colours that changes depending on the viewing angle. At night, the shafts are transformed into luminous works of art: two linear, warm white LED lights, which run along the entire height of the shafts, create a subtle effect. The reflections inside, reinforced by the dichroid foil, create a visual multiplication of the lines of light. The lines of light appear to change colour, creating a fascinating effect in the night scene.
Sustainability is a key aspect: the energy-efficient LEDs remain switched off during the day so that no electricity is consumed. An astronomical clock controls the lighting and switches it off at midnight.
